Our Story

Though it may not sound very romantic, Justin and Deanna fell in love over a piece of spam. Back in 2003, Justin was working as a sushi chef at a little Hawaiian restaurant that was right next to San Diego State. At the time, Deanna was a sophomore at SDSU and had a class that was next to Justin's restaurant. Though they can't exactly prove it, they are both pretty sure that they had run into each other several times before they actually met. They parked in the same parking structure every day and Deanna had eaten at Tiki Hut a bunch of times with her roommate, Meica. However, the first time they actually spoke to each other was online. He asked her, "So you go to San Diego State, do you ever eat at Tiki Hut?" When she answered yes, he asked, "Have you seen the cute bald sushi chef who works there?" She immediately said "No."

Deanna thought that would have ended the conversation right then and there, but then Justin asked "What do you order there?" She told him "Spam musubis!" His immediate response was: "Ew yuck! You're gross!" Somehow, that conversation lasted for over 14 hours. Throughout the night, Deanna and Justin discovered they had one major thing in common - they were both inevitably and irrefutably weird. She had an inexplicable fear of birds and he liked growling at babies to make them cry. She liked coloring on everything with crayons and he liked setting things on fire.

They also discovered they had mutual friends. Justin's co-worker was in the same sorority as Deanna's roommate. This information came in handy when Justin asked Deanna out on a date and she needed a background check.

Their very first date was on Valentine's Day. They went to go see a movie at Fashion Valley. He wanted to see How To Lose A Guy in Ten Days - she wanted to watch Shanghai Knights. She got her way and they both had to endure two hours of Jackie Chan pretending to speak English. After the movie ended, Justin took Deanna to the Children's Pool in La Jolla. They spent the night laughing under the stars and making fun of the fat, clumsy seals.

Every year, Justin and Deanna return to this spot on their anniversary. There are less seals living there now, but the ones that are left are still just as ridiculous looking.
